It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man (comp. , ). Israel, on its return from the Captivity, had begun by putting a good deal of trust in its human helpers, as Cyrus and the other friendly heathen mentioned in ; .

But this help, after a little time, had failed them (), and they had found themselves in great difficulties.
