The Coal and the Fire

You can be a Christian alone, but you will be a cold one. Don't let your fire go out. If you have been skipping church or watching only online, it's time to go back to the fire. Find a Bible-believing local church this Sunday and just show up. Get back in the pile.

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing..." () Imagine a charcoal grill burning hot at a barbecue.

The coals are piled together, glowing bright orange. The heat is intense. Now, imagine you take a pair of tongs, pick up one single coal , and set it on the concrete pavement by itself. What happens?

Within a few minutes, that isolated coal turns black and cold. It is still a coal—it didn't turn into a rock—but it has lost its fire. It cannot cook anything. It cannot provide warmth. But if you pick up that cold, black coal and toss it back into the pile of burning coals, it will catch fire again within seconds.

This is the picture of the Local Church . Many people say, "I don't need to go to church to be a Christian. I can worship God in nature or in my bedroom." Technically, that is true. You don't need to go to church to be saved (the thief on the cross went to paradise without ever joining a church).

However, you cannot survive or grow as a Christian alone. The world is a cold place. It throws water on your faith every day. If you stay isolated, your passion will cool down. You will drift. You need the "body heat" of other believers to stay on fire.

The church is not a building you visit; it is a family you belong to. A severed finger cannot survive apart from the hand. You were designed to be connected.

Digging Deeper

Theologically, the Greek word for church is Ekklesia . It literally means "The Called-Out Ones." It was never used to describe a building. It always described a gathering of people. We distinguish between two types of Church: The Universal Church: Every believer who has ever lived, from the Apostles to you.

We are all one in Christ. The Local Church: A specific group of believers in a specific city who meet regularly, have leaders, and practice the ordinances (Baptism/Communion) together. You belong to the Universal Church automatically when you are saved.

You belong to a Local Church voluntarily when you commit. You need both. You cannot love the Shepherd (Jesus) and hate His Bride (The Church). Reflect on this: Are you a "Consumer" or a "Member"? Consumers go to church to get (good music, good preaching).

If they don't get it, they leave. Members go to church to give (encouragement, service, worship). They are part of the family. 👣 Take a Step You can be a Christian alone, but you will be a cold one.

Don't let your fire go out. If you have been skipping church or watching only online, it's time to go back to the fire. Find a Bible-believing local church this Sunday and just show up. Get back in the pile.
