"Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account." (Hebrews 13:17) Imagine a terrible storm is raging outside. The rain is pouring, the wind is howling, and the hail is falling hard.
One man stands in the middle of the field, looking up at the sky. He shouts, "I am free! No one tells me what to do!" He is free, but he is also soaking wet, cold, and battered by the hail. Another man stands under a large, strong umbrella held by someone else.
He stays dry. The umbrella takes the hit of the rain so that he doesn't have to. This is the purpose of Spiritual Authority . In our culture, we hate the word "submit." We think it means being weak or being a slave.
But in the Kingdom, submission is not about Control ; it is about Covering . God designs the church to have leaders (Pastors, Elders) who act like that umbrella. Their job is to protect you, teach you, and "watch over your soul."
When you submit to a healthy, biblical church, you are stepping under their protection. You are saying, "I trust that God is leading you, so I will follow." If you refuse to have any authority in your life—if you say, "Only God can judge me" —you are stepping out from under the umbrella.
You are choosing to face the spiritual storm alone. That is not freedom; that is exposure.
Digging Deeper
Theologically, the word Submission comes from two roots: Sub (Under) + Mission (The Goal). It literally means "to put yourself under the mission of another." It does not mean the leader is "better" than you (the umbrella is not better than the man).
It just means they have a different role. Accountability is the practical side of this. Accountability means giving someone else the permission to ask you hard questions. "Are you treating your wife well?"
"Are you looking at things you shouldn't?" "Are you spending your money wisely?" If no one in your life has the right to tell you "No," you are in a dangerous place. A car with no brakes will eventually crash.
Reflect on this: Who is your "Umbrella"? Who is the person in your life who can call you out when you are being foolish? If the answer is "nobody," you are vulnerable. 👣 Take a Step Submission is not about being crushed; it's about being covered.
We all need a "brake" system. This week, give someone permission to lead you. Ask a mentor or pastor: "What is one blind spot you see in my life?" Then—and this is the hard part, listen to the answer without arguing.
