"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9) Imagine you go to the most expensive restaurant in the world.
The bill is $10,000. You check your pockets. You have $5. You cannot pay. Then, a wealthy man walks over, pays your bill, and hands you a Gift Card with a million dollars on it. He says, "Enjoy the meal."
Would you stand up and start washing the windows to "pay him back"? Would you brag to your friends, "I bought this great dinner!" No. That would be an insult to the giver. You simply say "Thank You" and eat.
This is Grace . Religion says: "I obey, therefore I am accepted." (Washing windows). The Gospel says: "I am accepted, therefore I obey." (Eating with gratitude). If you think your good behavior (church attendance, giving) contributes even 1% to your salvation, you are trying to pay the bill with your $5.
It insults the Cross. The bill is paid. Put your wallet away.
Digging Deeper
Theologically, this is Sola Gratia (Grace Alone). Grace is not just "unmerited favor"; it is favor given to the de-merited . We deserved wrath; we got a seat at the table. Works still matter, but they move to a new location.
Before Salvation: Works are useless (filthy rags). After Salvation: Works are worship (fruit of gratitude). We don't do good things to get saved; we do good things because we are saved. Reflect on this: Do you feel "lighter" when you read the Bible?
Or "heavier"? If you always feel heavier ("I need to do more"), you are drifting into Works. The Gospel should feel like a relief. The heavy lifting was done 2,000 years ago. 👣 Take a Step Action: The "Paid" Receipt.
Write "PAID IN FULL" on a sticky note. Put it on your mirror. Every time you mess up today, look at it. Don't try to pay for your sin with guilt. Jesus already paid for it with blood.
