devotionMatthew 4:4FastingSelf-Denial

The Dashboard Light

Your stomach is a terrible god. It is never satisfied. Fasting teaches your body who is really in charge.

"Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." () Imagine you are driving your car and the orange "Low Fuel" light blinks on the dashboard. What does that light tell you?

It tells you that the car is running out of its power source. It needs to be refilled. Now, imagine your body. When your stomach growls, it is a dashboard light. It usually says: "I need food." But Fasting is the act of rewiring that dashboard light.

When you fast, you feel the physical pain of hunger. But instead of filling it with a burger, you use that pain as a reminder: "My real fuel is not food. My real fuel is God." This is the discipline of Fasting .

We live in a culture of instant gratification. If we want it, we eat it, buy it, or watch it. We are slaves to our appetites. Fasting breaks the chains of the appetite. It is a physical act of war against the flesh.

It says to your body: "You are not the boss of me. You are a servant. My spirit is in charge."

Digging Deeper

Theologically, Fasting is Feasting on God. It is not a hunger strike to twist God's arm ("I'll starve until You bless me!"). That is manipulation. Biblical fasting is humility ( says "I humbled my soul with fasting" ).

It reveals what actually controls you. Do you get angry when you miss a meal? (Anger controls you). Do you get anxious? (Fear controls you). Fasting brings the hidden idols to the surface so you can kill them.

Reflect on this: Could you go 24 hours without food? If the answer is "No way," then food is your master, not Jesus. Fasting is the gym for your willpower. If you can say "No" to a pizza, you can eventually say "No" to lust, greed, and pride.

👣 Take a Step Action: Skip a meal. Choose one meal this week (e.g., lunch). Don't eat. Every time your stomach growls during that hour, use it as a prayer bell. Pray: "Lord, I want You more than I want this sandwich."
