devotionMatthew 6:3-4SecrecyReward

The Iceberg

If your public life is bigger than your private life, you are going to crash. Build the part of the iceberg nobody sees.

"But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

() Imagine an Iceberg . We all know the rule: Only 10% is visible above the water. 90% is hidden in the deep cold darkness. If you flipped an iceberg upside down—so 90% was in the air and only 10% was in the water—what would happen?

It would be top-heavy. It would crash. It would destroy everything around it. This is the discipline of Secrecy . We live in a "Performative" world. If we donate, we post it. If we pray, we do it in a group.

If we have a realization, we tweet it. We want the 90% to be visible. But spiritual weight is built in the dark. Jesus commands us to have a "Secret Life" with God that no one else knows about . Secret giving.

Secret fasting. Secret prayer. If your public life is bigger than your secret life, you are top-heavy. You will eventually tip over and crash (we see this with celebrity pastors all the time). The only thing that stabilizes a public leader is a massive, invisible weight of secret devotion.

Digging Deeper

Theologically, this is about the Audience of One . When you do something good and tell people, you get your reward: Their applause. The transaction is closed. When you do something good and tell no one , God owes you.

Not literally, but relationally. He sees it. He delights in it. Secrecy kills Hypocrisy . You can't be a hypocrite when you are alone, because there is no one to fool. Reflect on this: Is there anything holy in your life that nobody knows about?

Or is every good deed posted on social media? Try to have a secret between you and God. It builds intimacy like nothing else. 👣 Take a Step Action: The Secret Gift. This week, do an act of kindness or give money to someone anonymously .

Ensure they never find out it was you. If you tell anyone (even your spouse), it doesn't count. Feel the joy of having a secret with the King.
