"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Mammon." (Matthew 6:24) Imagine a throne room.
In the center, there is a single throne. God is seated there. He demands your trust, your security, and your devotion. But standing right next to the throne is a Rival. He is charming, powerful, and whispers promises in your ear: "I can make you safe.
I can make you happy. I can solve your problems." This Rival is Mammon . Jesus did not say, "You cannot serve God and Money." He used the Aramaic word Mammon . Mammon is not just currency (paper notes).
Mammon is a Spirit . It is the spiritual force that tells you money is the source of your life. God says: "Trust Me." Mammon says: "Trust your bank account." God says: "Be generous." Mammon says: "Be afraid; you might run out."
You cannot sit in two chairs. You cannot have two CEOs. If you check your bank balance more often than you pray, you might have already switched thrones. Discipleship is the process of firing Mammon and rehiring God as your Provider.
Digging Deeper
Money is the only thing Jesus likened to a "Master" (Kyrios). He never said, "You cannot serve God and Sex" or "God and Power." Why? Because Money mimics God. God offers Security; Money offers Security.
God offers Freedom; Money offers Freedom. God offers Power; Money offers Power. Money is the Anti-Christ of the heart. It demands worship. The only way to break the power of Mammon is Giving . Giving is an act of rebellion against the god of Greed.
Reflect on this: When you lose money (an unexpected bill, a bad investment), do you fall into despair? If you panic, it reveals that Money was your "Functional Savior." A disciple is prudent, but never panicked, because their Father owns the cattle on a thousand hills.
👣 Take a Step Action: The Rebel Gift. Prove to Mammon that he is not your boss. Take a significant amount of money (enough that you feel it) and give it away today. Not to your church—give it to a person in need.
As you send it, say out loud: "I am not a slave to paper. My trust is in the Lord."
