"The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (Jeremiah 17:9) Imagine you are lost in a deep forest. You pull out a compass to find your way home. You trust it to point North.
But you forgot that you have a strong magnet in your pocket. The magnet pulls the compass needle toward you , not toward the North Pole. You think you are walking in a straight line, but you are actually just walking in circles until you collapse.
This is the hidden danger of the modern advice: "Just follow your heart." Movies and songs tell us the heart is a pure, perfect guide. But the Bible tells us the human heart is a Broken Compass . It is pulled by anger.
It is pulled by pride. It is pulled by selfish desires. If you simply follow your feelings, your heart will not lead you to peace; it will lead you in circles. We shouldn't follow our hearts; we need to lead our hearts.
We must hold our feelings up to the True North of God's Word and force the needle to point the right way.
Digging Deeper
This deals with a big theological word: Depravity . It simply means that every part of us is infected by sin—including our feelings and our logic. We are born broken. Proverbs 28:26 says: "Those who trust in their own hearts are fools."
A wise disciple is always a little suspicious of their own strong desires. They pause and ask: "Is this feeling actually from God, or is this just my broken magnet pulling me off track?" Reflect on this: Have you ever made a big decision simply because it "felt right," only to regret it deeply later?
That was the magnet pulling you. Stop asking: "What do I want to do?" Start asking: "What does God's Word say I should do?" 👣 Take a Step Action: The Heart Audit. Think of a big decision you are trying to make right now.
Ask a wise, mature Christian friend: "Does my plan sound like God's wisdom, or does it sound like I'm just following my feelings?" Let them be your magnet-detector.
