"Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, 'Sit here while I go over there and pray.'" (Matthew 26:36) Imagine a ripe olive sitting on a branch. It is full of potential, but in its natural state, it is bitter.
To get the valuable oil inside, the olive cannot simply be washed or polished. It must be completely crushed. In ancient times, this was done in a heavy stone basin. A massive millstone would roll over the olives, breaking their skins and crushing their flesh until the pure, golden oil flowed out.
The word Gethsemane literally translates to "Oil Press." It was in Gethsemane that the pressure on Jesus became so immense that He sweat drops of blood. He was being crushed under the weight of the assignment.
As a mature disciple, you will face your own Gethsemane. When the pressure of your calling feels unbearable—when people betray you, when the workload is crushing you, when heaven goes silent—you are in the press.
The amateur complains about the heavy stone. The mature disciple understands that the stone is what produces the anointing. You cannot have the oil of true spiritual authority without the crushing weight of the press.
Digging Deeper
The anointing of the Holy Spirit is rarely poured out on unbroken vessels. Paul understood this crushing intimately: "We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself.
But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God" (2 Corinthians 1:8-9). The crushing kills your self-reliance. It forces the pure oil of dependency to flow. When you are squeezed by betrayal, stress, or loss, whatever is truly inside of you will spill out.
Reflect on this: Are you under immense pressure right now? Do you feel like you are being crushed by the weight of your responsibilities? Do not run from the press. Stay in the garden. God is extracting a level of anointing from your life that could never be produced in comfort.
👣 Take a Step Action: Surrender the Pressure. Identify the specific situation that is "crushing" you today. Pray exactly what Jesus prayed in the press: "Lord, if it is possible, take this cup from me.
But if not, Your will be done. Let the oil flow."
