And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife,—the valuable chronological fact here stated for the first time proves that Isaac was married three years after his mother's death (cf. )—the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, the sister to Laban the Syrian (vide on ; ).

Though a descendant of Arphaxad (), Bethuel is styled a Syrian, or Aramaean, from the country of his adoption. On Padanaram vide .
